Oral Cancer Screenings in Coronado

Oral Cancer Screenings | Isabella Avenue Dentistry

Oral cancer is one of the most deadly forms of cancer. Oral cancer has a five-year survival rate of just 57%, compared to a nearly 93% survival rate for breast cancer.

This is primarily because it is very hard to detect oral cancer without regular preventative oral health screenings. The early signs and symptoms of oral cancer are often not detectable, so it’s not diagnosed until it reaches Stage III or IV, and metastasizes throughout the body.

For this reason, regular San Diego oral cancer screenings from Dr. Leslie Strommer at Isabella Avenue Dentistry are absolutely essential. If you undergo regular screenings, Dr. Strommer can detect potential cases of oral cancer before the disease progresses.

How Often Should I Be Screened For Oral Cancer?

The ADA recommends yearly oral cancer screenings for all dental patients. Oral cancer screenings can usually be conducted as part of a regular teeth cleaning and oral exam, so they should be part of your normal dental care routine.

If you are a smoker or conform to other known risk factors, you may need to be examined more frequently.

What Are The Signs Of Oral Cancer?

There are several signs and symptoms of oral cancer that you should be on the lookout for.

  • Sore/irritated oral tissue
  • Discoloration on patches of tissue
  • Lumps and other abnormalities in the mouth
  • Abnormal texture/appearance of oral tissue
  • Pain in the ear, mouth, or face
  • Swelling or the feeling of a “lump” in your throat

During your oral exam, Dr. Strommer will look for all of these signs of oral cancer, and identify potential abnormalities. If there is cause for concern, Dr. Strommer will refer you to an experienced oncologist for an official diagnosis.

How Does An Oral Cancer Screening Work?

Oral cancer screenings are performed as part of your regular dental check-ups. Dr. Strommer will take a look at your mouth, and check for any abnormalities that may indicate the presence of cancer or precancerous cells.

The procedure is non-invasive. Dr. Strommer will simply examine your mouth, and may need to palpate or touch areas to determine if there is any pain or irritation present. A comprehensive screening only takes about 5 minutes.

What Are The Risk Factors For Developing Oral Cancer?

Anyone can develop oral cancer. However, there are some factors that can dramatically increase your risk. These include:

  • Tobacco use (including pipes, cigars, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, smokeless tobacco)
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Poor levels of oral hygiene
  • A weakened immune system
  • High levels of sun exposure from tanning or outdoor work
  • HPV infection

In addition, oral cancer diagnoses are much more common after the age of 40. If you are over the age of 40 and conform to any of these risk factors, schedule an oral cancer exam with Isabella Avenue Dentistry today.
