Coronado Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride Treatments – Isabella Avenue Dentistry

Fluoride treatments are a powerful preventative dentistry tool. With proper fluoride treatments, you can prevent issues like tooth decay and halitosis (bad breath), and rebuild teeth that have been damaged by cavities or bruxism (teeth grinding). And Isabella Avenue Dentistry offers this non-invasive treatment to all our patients!

What Does Fluoride Do?

Fluoride treatments are used to prevent tooth decay and rebuild damaged teeth. Fluoride is a powerful substance that helps discourage tooth “demineralization” (enamel loss) and encourages “remineralization”, thereby helping to strengthen the teeth.

Every day, our teeth lose some enamel because of demineralization. Poor oral care habits, excessive consumption of sweets and acidic foods, and several other factors can encourage demineralization, eventually leading to tooth decay and cavities.

Fluoride treatments help curb this process of demineralization, encouraging minerals to bind to the enamel of the teeth. This restores your smile and helps mitigate tooth decay.

What Is A Fluoride Treatment?

After cleaning your teeth, Dr. Leslie Strommer of Isabella Avenue Dentistry will apply a specialized fluoride paste or gel to your teeth, “painting” it on every surface of your teeth. This fluoride-heavy product will help boost the fluoride levels in your teeth.

A fluoride treatment can help prevent cavities for 3-12 months, though you must also still maintain proper oral care habits for the best results.

Are Dental Sealants The Same As Fluoride Treatments?

Sometimes, fluoride treatments get confused with dental sealants. But while these procedures are very different, they both can help prevent cavities.

Dental sealants utilize advanced plastic-based films that are placed directly on the teeth, usually on the hard-to-reach rear molars.

This plastic bonds closely to the surface of the teeth, creating a “seal” that prevents the buildup of food, acid, bacteria, and plaque. In turn, this dramatically reduces the risk of tooth decay.

Depending on your needs, either a dental sealant or a fluoride treatment could be right for you.

What Are The Benefits Of Fluoride Treatments?

Stronger teeth – Fluoride strengthens your teeth, and can even help reverse the effects of tooth decay, to some extent.

Lower risk of developing cavities – This is one of the reasons that fluoride treatments are popular among children. A single fluoride treatment helps dramatically boost resistance to tooth decay, preventing cavities and encouraging a healthier mouth.

Reduces tooth sensitivity – In some patients, tooth demineralization can lead to teeth that are sensitive to heat and cold. Fluoride treatments help treat this issue, and reduce tooth sensitivity.
